Having a serious disagreement with a friend through the course of past few days made me realize that real friendship can sustain disagreement, can accommodate opposing views and still hold together.
If we can be friends only when we agree and our alliance easily falls apart when we disagree, then our friendship is shallow. Part of deep friendship is a commitment to work through disagreements, differences of viewpoints, and even sustain the friendship when each partner holds contrary views. While appreciating the many deep connections between my friend and I, it may even be more important for our understanding to see where we are in conflict.
My hope is that the disagreement will cause each one of us to think more deeply, to understand the opposing views more fully, and that this understanding will provide the ground from which reconciling view could grow.
